Take a drive across the great savannah plains home to over seventy species of mammals including lions, giraffes and elephants and cruise along the Nile River where crocodiles, hippos and a variety of bird species live.

Highlights

The park is dominated by rivers, woodland, savannah, wetlands and tropical forest habitats that provide homes for 76 different mammalian species and 450 bird species. Large mammals consist of leopard, elephant, lion, hippopotamus, Rothschild’s giraffe, hartebeest, oribi, warthog, Cape buffalo, and Uganda kob. The Nile corridor offers permanent water for these animals and lots of water birds which include the rare shoebill stork as well as Uganda’s biggest population of Nile crocodile. KaniyoPabidi forest also provides sanctuaries for chimpanzee and different primates along with an amazing 360 species of bird.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Kampala – Masindi

You’ll leave Kampala by road via Masindi road heading to West Nile. The drive to Masindi town is approximately 6 hours and you’ll take a detour to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see rhinos in Nakitoma
– Nakasongola.

Depending on your time of departure, in the late afternoon you’ll arrive at Masindi hotel, the oldest hotel in Uganda, built in 1923 by the East Africa Railways and Harbours Company. Ernest Hemingway was involved in two plane crashes at Murchison Falls and Butiaba airstrip, within the space of one week. He recovered at Masindi Hotel. Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn stayed at Masindi Hotel while filming The African Queen at Masindi Port.

Day 2

Masindi – Kaniyo Pabidi Forest – Fort Murchison

Early in the morning, you’ll set off for Kaniyo-Pabidi (Budongo) forest. This forest ecosystem contains black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, olive baboons, and a habituated chimp group which can be tracked. Elephants, buffalos, lions and leopards are also frequent visitors. Many forest birds can be viewed here, including the chocolate-backed kingfisher, white-thighed hornbill and Puvel's illadopsis which is found nowhere else in East Africa.

After lunch, you’ll proceed to the northern sector of the park where you’ll make trails for your lodgings. In the evening you’ll check into Fort Murchison/Chobe for dinner and much needed rest after the long journey.

Day 3

Game Drive & Boat Cruise

Following breakfast (07:00) you’ll go for a morning game drive in the northern circuit of the park. Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savannah. First gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, it is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 birds.

In the open savannah grasslands you’ll encounter giraffes, hartebeest, buffalo, elephants, lions and many other animals. For the birding enthusiast, these areas support the secretary bird, black chested snake eagle, tawny and marshal eagles, carmine and swallow tailed bee -eaters. This is a beautiful drive across borassus palm forest and grassland savannah down to Lake Albert where the Albert Nile heads north to the Sudan.

After the game drive you’ll head back to the lodge for lunch before taking a gentle boat cruise to the foot of the Murchison falls.

Day 4

Top of the Falls – Kampala

After breakfast take a drive and walk up to the top of the Murchison falls at this point the Victoria Nile squeezes through an eight metres wide gorge and plunges forty three meters with a thunderous roar into the “Devil’s Cauldron”, creating a rainbow.
